DescriptionData Science Workflows Architect - 97408
Division: NE-NERSC

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL, https://www.lbl.gov/) NERSC Division (https://www.nersc.gov/) has an opening for a Data Science Workflows Architect to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will help scientists take advantage of the most powerful computers in the US. Scientists are facing new challenges in their computing workflows. Increasingly, large-scale data analysis needs to be combined with simulations and machine learning, sometimes in real-time. Working at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) in the Data Science Engagement group, you will use cutting-edge technology to advance the scientific mission of the Department of Energy.

In this role, you will be responsible for supporting our user community to adapt and optimize their workflows for High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, including data transfer, code optimization, AI and automation You will be part of multidisciplinary and cross-institution scientific projects, working with scientists and instruments from around the world.

What You Will Do:
• Work with domain scientists to use HPC resources at NERSC.
• Configure the user environment on NERSC supercomputers to maximize scientific productivity for the user community. This includes installing, maintaining and documenting a productive and performant set of tools (e.g., Jupyter, Podman, Julia or Python), defining job scheduling parameters to meet user needs, and monitoring system performance from an application perspective.
• Educate users by creating content for the NERSC website with online tutorials and documentation, giving presentations, and attending conferences. Communicate with users about new opportunities and capabilities in software and systems and advise them in effectively transitioning to new technologies.
• Communicate clearly to both domain scientists and computer systems engineers, explaining the subtleties of using an HPC system and translating scientific requirements into computing needs.
RequirementsWhat is Required: • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience. • Programming background in languages including (any one of) C/C++, Python, Java, and shell scripting. • Prior experience managing computational needs and resources, either as a user or as an administrator. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to express yourself clearly in both written (e.g. conference papers, technical papers, documentation, email) and oral (e.g. via zoom and in person) communication. • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team. • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems via data-driven analysis. Desired Qualifications: • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience. • Experience working with experiments that have real-time and/or large-scale computing requirements. • Experience with HPC systems, including use of a batch scheduling system. • Software development experience, including version control and debugging. • Experience with cloud technologies, software, interfaces/APIs and containers. • Experience with (and enthusiasm for) modern computing architectures, such as GPUs, or FPGAs. • Understanding of Big Data-type problems, including system I/O, data transfer, and storage needs. Notes: • This is a full-time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate. • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment. • Work may be performed on-site, hybrid, full-time telework or remote modes. Work must be performed within the United States. How To Apply Apply directly online at http://50.73.55.13/counter.php?id=244875 and follow the on-line instructions to complete the application process. Based on University of California Policy - SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program and U.S Federal Government requirements, Berkeley Lab requires that all members of our community obtain the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as they are eligible. As a condition of employment at Berkeley Lab, all Covered Individuals must Participate in the COVID-19 Vaccination Program by providing proof of Full Vaccination or submitting a request for Exception or Deferral.
