Overview

The Doctoral Showcase provides a unique opportunity for students nearing completion of their doctoral program to present a summary of their dissertation research in the form of a poster and a talk. Unlike Papers and other Poster presentations, the Doctoral Showcase highlights the entire contents of a dissertation, including previously published results, to allow for a broad perspective of the work.

SC22 submissions will be accepted from PhD students who plan to graduate by December 2023.

The authors of accepted submissions will be invited to present in a special Doctoral Showcase session at the SC Conference and will also display their work as a poster.

Preparing Your Submission

The Doctoral Showcase submission consists of three main components: an abstract (250 words), a Thesis Canvas (i.e., poster), and a list of research artifacts (publications, software, etc.) directly contributing to your PhD dissertation.

Poster Format

The SC Conference may provide a poster template as a guideline. Final poster style, layout, font, and content are left to the discretion of the author(s). Poster size should be such that your poster mounts properly on the four feet high and eight feet wide display board that will be provided by SC. Your poster does not need to cover the entire display board; the poster size should be appropriate for your content.

You can embed additional multimedia elements into your poster by placing QR (Quick Response) codes anywhere you want to link to external content. Such elements may include a video narration of the poster by the author, links to results, movies, graphics, datasets, codes, etc. The goal of embedded multimedia elements should be to enhance the presentation of research in the poster. Note that extended versions of the poster or related publications are not considered acceptable multimedia elements in this context.

At the time of submission, the poster content does not need to be in its final form. You may make changes to your poster after acceptance, but your submission for review must be a representative draft of the final poster.

Where to Submit

Doctoral Showcase materials are submitted via the SC submissions website.

Authors submitting a Doctoral Showcase should take care to select the correct submission type within the SC submissions website. Once submitted, the type cannot be changed.

Review Criteria

All Thesis Canvases are peer-reviewed by a committee of experts. Thesis Canvas reviews are single-blind: reviewers will see the author’s name, but the author will not see reviewer names. Thesis Canvases are evaluated primarily on technical content and relevance to SC22. Presentation aesthetics are a secondary consideration.

Conflict of Interest

Please review the SC Conference Conflict of Interest guidelines before submitting your Thesis Canvas.

Plagiarism

Please see the IEEE guidelines on identifying plagiarism. The Thesis Canvas may incorporate content by the author that has previously been published.

Upon Acceptance

Travel Support

If your submission is accepted, partial travel support to the SC conference may be available through the Technical Consortium on High Performance Computing (TCHPC). Authors who receive travel support from TCHPC are expected to attend the TCHPC Birds of Feather session.

In-Person Presentations

SC22 is planning an in-person event and presenting in-person is encouraged. A supporting digital experience will accommodate those who cannot attend in-person due to travel restrictions or health concerns.

Registration

If your Doctoral Showcase is accepted, you must register for the Technical Program in order to attend the SC Conference and present your showcase.

Finalizing Accepted Doctoral Showcases

If your Doctoral Showcase is accepted, you may make updates to finalize the Thesis Canvas content.

Your Doctoral Showcase will be included in the online SC Schedule provided you upload your materials to the SC submissions website before September 15, 2022.

Archives

Doctoral Showcase presenters are asked to provide an abstract, presentation slides, and a full version of their Thesis Canvas for the Technical Program Archives. All final materials must be submitted to the SC submissions website before September 30, 2022.

On-site

Schedule and Location

The Doctoral Showcase will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2022. Each author will give a short talk and present the research behind their poster.

Doctoral Showcase posters will be displayed Tuesday–Thursday, November 15–17, 2022.

Doctoral Showcase posters must be mounted between 2 pm and 5 pm on Monday, November 14, 2022 and should remain mounted until 5 pm on Thursday, November 17, 2022. This allows conference attendees to browse posters outside the Posters sessions.

Doctoral Showcase authors should be available to talk with attendees and answer questions about their research at the Tuesday evening Posters Reception.

Doctoral Showcase Presentation

Doctoral Showcase authors will be provided a time slot during the Tuesday Doctoral Showcase to give a talk on their research.

Posters Reception

The Posters Reception on Tuesday evening provides food and drink to registered Technical Program attendees. Doctoral Showcase authors should be available to talk with attendees and answer questions about their research.

Infrastructure

Doctoral Showcase presentations are assigned either a classroom or a theater room equipped with standard AV facilities:

  • Projector
  • Microphone and podium
  • Wireless lapel microphone or wireless handheld microphone
  • Projection screen

At the Poster Reception, each Doctoral Showcase poster is given a designated space with a display board. Before the conference, we will send authors a poster directory that maps assigned display boards. The title of each poster will also be printed on its display board in the Posters area to help you locate your space.

The display board includes a QR code. This QR code links the poster to the Technical Program Archives, where each poster has its own web page and the most updated version of the material. Hiding or removing the QR code will prevent attendees from easily accessing your poster in the Technical Program Archive. You do not have to generate these QR codes. We generate one QR code for every poster that points to your submitted content. This code is attached to the poster pedestal by the time you arrive at SC.

Pushpins will be provided for affixing all poster materials to display boards. Mounting your poster on foam core is not recommended.

The conference does not provide any support for printing posters. Typically, authors print their posters ahead of the conference at their home institution or via a commercial printing company (e.g., a FedEx office). The convention center’s business office may offer printing services.
