James Demmel

Biography
Prof. James Demmel is a Distinguished Professor at UC Berkeley. He is the former chair of the Computer Science Division and EECS Department of UC Berkeley. Demmel is known for his work on numerical linear algebra libraries, including LAPACK, ScaLAPACK and SuperLU. Demmel’s work on high performance computing has been recognized by many honors and awards, including the member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, American Academy of Arts and Sciencess; Fellow of the AAAS, ACM, AMS, IEEE and SIAM; ACM Paris Kanellakis Theory and Practice Award, IPDPS Charles Babbage Award, IEEE Sidney Fernbach Award, 13 best paper prizes. Demmel was one of two scientists honored in 1986 with the Leslie Fox Prize for Numerical Analysis and he was the winner of the J.H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing, the IEEE's Sidney Fernbach Award and the IEEE Computer Society Charles Babbage Award.
