DescriptionBerkeley Lab (LBNL) is the home of world-class team science in service to the nation, and leads the Quantum Systems Accelerator (QSA), a 15-institution quantum information science (QIS) research center. Berkeley Lab’s Applied Math and Computational Research Division has an opening for a Quantum Information Science (QIS) Program Manager to support the QSA in achieving strategic program goals, maintaining relationships with high-level stakeholders in the academic, national laboratory, and industrial landscape, and managing the day-to-day operational aspects of scientific research and related quantum ecosystem activities.
RequirementsWhat is Required: • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a related field and/or equivalent training experience with 5 years of work experience including program planning, scheduling, and budgeting. • Knowledge of scientific laboratory governance, policy and planning at the University and National Levels. • General knowledge of program manager principles and tools. • Experience coordinating the planning efforts for diverse programs of moderate size or portions of major programs. • Experience anticipating potential customer needs and new research opportunities. • Experience with accounting and budgeting principles and computer-based reporting systems. • Demonstrated record in diplomacy, discretion, and trustworthiness. • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate and influence effectively with all levels of staff, faculty, funding agencies, alumni/donors, students and external constituents, both verbally and in writing. • Ability to manage others effectively, particularly in a non-hierarchical environment (experience with management styles that utilize persuasion rather than using authority to achieve collaborative goals and solutions). • Ability to develop new organizational structures, processes, and policies in accordance with emerging strategies. • Ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams to achieve desired outcomes • Advanced analytical/problem-solving skills. • Ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. • Effective at time- and project-management skills with the ability to prioritize work assignments, work collaboratively with others, and adjust schedules based on changing requirements. • Familiarity with project management principles and tools. Desired Qualifications: • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a related field and/or equivalent training experience and 8 years of related work experience in management of large programs and/or program management. • Experience coordinating and/or leading the planning and control for moderate to large, complex programs. • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in all aspects of program/ initiative planning, budgeting, and scheduling. • Demonstrated success consulting and working effectively with senior leadership within a large organization. • Familiarity with DOE National Laboratory management and policies. • Active membership in scientific societies relevant to QIS.
