DescriptionOverview:

The Technology Integration Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a highly motivated scientist to assist with the research, design, and deployment for next-generation leadership computing systems. The successful candidate should understand one or more of the following:

Processor architectures (e.g., CPU, GPU, FPGA)

Memory architectures (e.g., DRAM, DDR, HBM, persistent memories)
Interconnects (e.g., electrical, optical, various topologies)
Storage hierarchy (e.g., Flash, NVMe, HDD, tape)


This position is part of the Advanced Technologies Section within the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division. The Advanced Technologies Section offers scientific, technical, operational, and thought leadership by developing, hardening, and deploying solutions for compute and data intensive computing environments.



The NCCS provides state-of-the-art computational and data science infrastructure, coupled with dedicated technical and scientific professionals, to accelerate scientific discovery and engineering advances across a broad range of disciplines. NCCS hosts the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, one of DOE’s National User Facilities, and home to the Frontier supercomputer.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with NCCS researchers on a wide variety of high-performance computing platform design projects.
Assist with the integration and deployment of research in hardware-software design and heterogeneous large-scale systems.
Perform scaling and performance evaluations of modern heterogeneous and extreme-scale high-performance computing systems.
Develop analytics to understand use of current systems to help define requirements for future systems.
Research and develop new capabilities that enhance ORNL’s leading data infrastructures.
Collaborate in authoring peer reviewed papers, technical papers, reports, and proposals.
RequirementsBasic Qualifications: B.S. in computer science, computer engineering, computational science, or a related field and 4+ years of experience or equivalent or M.S. in one of these fields and 2+ years of experience. Familiarity with systems programming. Proven ability to analyze, design, develop, and deploy solutions. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, computational science, or a related field and 2+ years of relevant experience. Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and strong personal motivation. Experience with one or more of: Working with compute accelerators and heterogeneous node and system architectures, Hierarchical memory architectures and/or storage class memories, High-performance interconnects, and/or Heterogeneous system design and deployment. Experience with modern software development practices. A good understanding of hardware/software interactions at the Linux kernel level. Special Requirement: This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
