SUMMARY:Revontuli
DESCRIPTION:Student Cluster Competition\n\nRevontuli\n\nEnkovaara, Vahteri
sto, Trinh, Saraste, Halonen...\n\nThis team, "Revontuli" (northern lights
in Finnish), is Finland's first ever entry to SCC, and all the team membe
rs are first-timers. The team is coordinated and managed by CSC which is t
he national supercomputing center of Finland and the host of the 550 Pflop
s LUMI pre-exascale supercomputer. The team is unique in such a way that i
ts members come from four universities (Aalto University, University of He
lsinki, Tampere University and LUT University) in four different cities (H
elsinki, Espoo, Tampere and Lappeenranta) in Finland. That is, it's not a
university team but a true all-Finnish team.\n\nCSC started looking for te
am members in the fall of 2021 by distributing flyers and contacting unive
rsities with computational science programs. We received a number of appli
cations, interviewed the most promising candidates, and finalized the team
before Christmas holidays. In addition to the technical skills, we emphas
ized the motivation to learn HPC and to work as a team. The team members a
re at different stages in their BSc studies in computer science, but all a
re experienced Linux users and hobbyist or even professional programmers w
ith experience in various programming languages including Fortran, C/C++,
Python. CSC's role is to bring in the HPC skills. One of the team members,
Roope Salmi, has won the bronze medal in the International Olympiad in In
formatics 2020, however, none of them had HPC experience before. Thus, thi
s competition provides the team members a unique possibility to learn HPC.
As the importance of HPC is increasing in multitude of scientific discipl
ines the competition is very likely to benefit the participants whatever t
heir exact academic path will turn out to be.\n\nThe advisor, Dr. Jussi En
kovaara has background in computational physics and has been at CSC since
2005. He has experience in developing and optimizing large scientific appl
ications and international HPC projects. Currently, he is working in HPC s
upport helping customers in optimizing and parallelizing scientific applic
ations and contributing to the CSC's user training.\n\nRegistration Catego
